Maya Trujillo: Aerialist, High Priestess of the Dead : San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

March 23-24, 2020

“Pigs lay squished in between cages, unable to move, on the back of a giant trailer truck that drives down my street to their ultimate death - the slaughterhouse. As I watch the animals go by, I can’t help but to feel like a caged animal myself looking out the window from my bedroom.”

Maya Trujillo is a unique and divine soul. We met in Chicago where she had just moved from San Miguel de Allende, Mexico and was living with Dusty and Ross. When we met, she was getting acclimated to the freezing Midwestern winters, a contrast from where she grew up. But she had this enlightening appreciation for the creatures often disdained in the city - the pigeons, the rats, the cockroaches. Like a true Mexican, she honors and is fascinated by death, and has taught me in small ways to do the same.

She has recently moved back to San Miguel de Allende as she has inherited the circus school she grew up in, and teaches aerial gymnastics there. You can follow her on instagram to see some of her aerial videos which are always so fascinating to watch.

Maya has updated me since sending me her pages to say that when she wrote this there were no confirmed cases of Covid-19, but as of March 28 there was one.

Contemplate roaches and classism with Maya for a couple of days:
